discover what matters most - free YouTube training
Go check out Part 1 of this post.
And don’t miss my free YouTube training below!
In Part 1, we examined this quote from British activist George Monbiot:
“To be at peace with a troubled world: this is not a reasonable aim… If you don't fit in, if you feel at odds with the world, if your identity is troubled and frayed, if you feel lost and ashamed it could be because you have retained the human values you were supposed to have discarded. You are a deviant. Be proud.”
We talked about being a deviant.
Today we're going to shift to one of my favorite conversations related to those of you who feel your “identity is troubled and frayed”. Today's conversation is all about values and a practical tool to discover what matters most.
Identity is, simply put, "who am I?"
And a huge part of identity development is answering the question, “what do I value?”
From Monbiot: “If you feel lost and ashamed it could be because you have retained the human values you were supposed to have discarded.”
Ouch.
Self-Reflection:
What values have you retained that you want to discard at this point in your life?
What matters most to you now that you want to prioritize and build your life around?
Personally, achievement and harmony were two values I determined to let go of over the past decade of my personal growth journey. I appreciate and enjoy achieving big goals, but achievement is no longer a life value of mine. Ultimately, this value left me feeling anxious, behind, and burnt out. Hello, comparison trap. I also appreciate being in harmony with others, but I value harmony within myself now. My new rule: I'll allow myself to be out of harmony with others way before I abandon myself. This was not the case previously in my life. (Recovery)
Values Sort:
One of my favorite therapy tools comes out of research conducted by the University of New Mexico. It's called the Values Card Sort. I'm sharing this activity with you today in the form of a YouTube training. This training was filmed several years ago for a coaching group I led for anxious achievers.
The goal is simple: To discover your Top 5 Life Values.
When we know what matters most to us (what we value), we can live and make decisions out of our top values.
When we know what we value, we can discover who we are.
I've conducted this activity with hundreds of counseling clients, and no one has ever had the same top values. Curious to discover yours? Get started this week.
What You Need:
