“Vision is a mental picture of what could be, fueled by a passion that it should be.” - Andy Stanley
We imagine that, much like RJ and me, you and your partner lead busy lives. The demands of daily life can take precedence, and routines become the norm. Suddenly, you may find yourselves wondering, "What are we doing? Are we moving forward with purpose?" Alternatively, you might wake up one day to realize that things in your relationship are not going as smoothly. The question arises, "How did we get here?"
This is the purpose of creating a Vision Plan, either as a family or a couple — to create a direction, vision, and mental picture of what could be and what should be for your relationship, family, and life.
Our hope for you today, if you’ve found yourself here at this blog post, is that you'll skim, bookmark for later, forward this blog to a friend. If you're interested in starting a vision planning process together in your relationship or family, read on. This post will guide you in planning a couples vision retreat. Be sure to snag the vision retreat questions at the bottom of this blog.
The Basics
A shared vision with your partner can help align your goals, provide clarity and focus, enhance your communication, and build a strong foundation. It can help with conflict resolution, accountability and motivation, and resilience through change and challenge. A shared vision cultivates intimacy and closeness, knowing that you and your partner are on the same team.
Ideally, a Couples Vision Retreat is a relaxing weekend, set aside and planned ahead of time, where you can be 100% focused on each other and the life you want to create together. We suggest two nights and two days.
Review the questions and topics ahead of time, separately. Take notes. Prepare. Pray. Add your own questions. Get creative.
Suggested Schedule
Evening #1 – Relaxed dinner time together
Morning #1 – Review last year's vision goals if you have them. Go over questions.
Lunch Break – Exercise together. Get outside.
Afternoon #1 – Continue questionnaire. Talk through your answers. Notice which topics are most important to you. Your partner. Begin setting vision and goals.
Evening #2 – Put vision casting aside to enjoy a fun date together. Let the information sink in. Relax. Laugh together.
Morning #2 – Continue to adjust goals. Write them down for reference throughout the year. Grab your family calendar. Time block vacations or important dates for the year.
